Vetting, process of state police to start

Police vetting targeting assets accumulated via crime will start in January.

The implementation of the Vetting Process for state police will begin in January. Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed his optimism that the process will yield tremendous results in transforming the state police.

"I am convinced that the vetting process that will be launched by January will give important results and I am confident that the generations that will emerge from the academy year after year will be revolutionary to the state police." said Edi Rama.

At the International Scientific Conference "Legal Science and Contemporary Security Challenges", organized in Tirana this morning, Rama emphasized the importance of beginning the operation the "Force of Law", that has been a hot topic this week.

According to Rama, this project will be aimed at investigating the biggest fish, with the most important work relating to the investigation of assets that may have been acquired via criminal acts.

"By targeting assets and finances of criminal origins we can strip the criminal networks from the possibility of a return, sending a very clear message that those who try to benefit from crime simply can not enjoy what it earns." said Rama.

In support of the positive results achieved by his government, Rama referred to INSTAT data regarding the number of murders in the country.

"In 2013, Albanian statistics showed that there were four murders for every 100 thousand inhabitants. Today this number is 1.5. Let me remind you that the average according to Eurostat is 1.7" said Edi Rama.

Interior Minister Fatmir Xhafaj also expressed his optimism about the 2018 budget. He underlined that next year investments will focus on technology and scientific equipment that, according to Xhafaj, have been missing for years.

"I remain critical about the quality of the investigative work for the procedures of searching, obtaining and documenting evidence, specifically the manner of use and the rules of preservation and disposal according to procedures established by law. Evidence must meet the conditions to fulfill the legal requirements to be admissible in court. This is to guarantee and respect the rights and freedom of citizens." said Fatmir Xhafaj.

The meeting also underlined the importance of regional collaboration in the fight against international organized crime groups.
