OPPOSITION SHOULD ENTER ELECTIONS

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of State, Matthew Palmer arrived on an official visit, which he declared was not aimed at launching negotiations between political parties in Albania.

He stated that elections without the opposition would spell disaster.

In a meeting with journalists, he emphasized the cooperation between the countries and the strengthening of the fight against crime.

Palmer was assertive with the opposition in demanding their participation in the June elections.

Moreover, the U.S. official declared that he isn't in Albania to negotiate solving the political crisis, but he encouraged all political parties to participate in the elections.

“The United States seeks transparency and cooperation between countries, while Russia seeks chaos. We want a better future for the region. Albania is a difficult target for Russia,” said Palmer.

He condemned the withdrawal of mandates, while stressing that the opposition should only come to power through democratic paths.

“The withdrawal of mandates by the opposition is not a solution; the opposition should find a way to participate in the elections.

“The opposition's responsibility is to take part in the June elections, to share its vision with its supporters and work hard to win the election.

Regarding the allegations that the Democratic Party has lobbied against the US embassy candidate in Albania, Kathleen Ann Kavalec, Palmer said the case is under investigation.

When asked about the US lobbying contracts, Palmer said the law is clear about the rules that should be followed.

Holding a press conference for nearly one hour with journalists, Palmer mostly focussed on the relations between Serbia and Kosovo, where Palmer said that an agreement between the parties is needed.

Regarding Russian influence in the Region, Palmer said Albania is a difficult target to be reached by Moscow.
