Marathon of Tirana, traffic restrictions will apply

This Sunday, 2500 runners from 40 different countries will take part in the Semi-Marathon of Tirana.

Mayor of Tirana Municipality Erion Veliaj held a meeting with volunteers and administrators of the event to coordinate the organization.

“It is an extraordinary way for the world to encounter the city and a fantastic chance for us to produce a Tirana postcard.

“We have a large number of assistants, from the volunteer organisers to the motivators and enthusiasts, not to mention the runners themselves,” said Erion Veliaj.

The mayor stated that all the measures for marathon progress have been made to serve the participants.

“We will have 7 stations, where not only will water be served, but there will also be music to encourage runners. I believe we will have a very quiet and regular marathon.

“We have taken all the measures, all the workers of the city, our enterprises are taking care to clean the city, to plant flowers and to make sure the runways to the lake are completed,” said Erion Veliaj.

The mayor has sought the understanding of the Tirana residents by inviting them to give up their vehicles for the day.

“For all citizens we have some messages: First, that the traffic in the central area of Tirana during the marathon, starting early in the morning at dawn and until after the final marathon runner finishes, all traffic will be diverted.

“So we will have a car-free city. In this way, even those who do not run the marathon will have oxygen throughout the day, like never before,” said Erion Veliaj.

For the first time, the olive crown for the winners will come from the country where the Marathon originates.

The race will be held on October 7th and offers 3 categories; the Half Marathon (21.0975 km), the Tirana 10K and the "We too" category which aims to encourage those wanting to participate to do so without feeling the need be competitive.
