An Agreement Is Reached On Electoral Reform, The US And The EU Are Satisfied

The Political Council finds agreement on electoral reform.

Four representatives, Damian Gjiknuri, Oerd Bylykbashi, Rudina Hajdari and Petrit Vasili, signed on the evening of June 5, 2020, the document that will give Albania a new Electoral Code.

The document was signed in the presence of all three ambassadors - US Ambassador Yuri Kim, EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca and the UK Ambassador who have been very active in these difficult negotiations.

All parties have given their contributions, but they have given up, they have given something for Albania to benefit.

Some will criticize this agreement as insufficient, but if we look at it in a broader context, this is something we will all support later.

As for the United States, we are proud of this agreement and we will support you on the path to European integration, "said US Ambassador Yuri Kim as soon as she left the Palace of Congresses.

The Political Council arrived at the Palace of Congresses with US Ambassador Yuri Kim, EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca and the UK Ambassador at around 19:30 and the meeting closed at around 20:40.

The composition of the election administration remains unchanged, while depoliticization remains after the 2021 elections.

What the opposition took as trophies is biometric identification, while giving up the technical government before the election.

The release of the DP by the SP is a decision not to exclude the Democrats from the elections. As for the internationals, this political agreement brings Albania closer to the EU.

The parliamentary opposition does not give up the discussion on the system, although the two main parties do not seem to have any plans at all.

The work of the political council will continue with the electoral system, the law on referendums and the law on the financing of political parties.

Ora News provides the document signed by the members of the political council with 12 points.

The DP chairman states that a step forward has been taken to provide more guarantees for free and fair elections in Albania, while Prime Minister Rama, the leader of the majority, said that it was done as the LBPD wanted and invited him to the next elections.

President Ilir Meta called the news positive but not enough for a free election.
