Changing the tax laws for low wages has sparked debate in the Economic Parliamentary Commission.

The proposal by MPs is to increase the tax-free threshold to 40,000 lekë per month, but this has been opposed by the Ministry of Economy.

“I think we have to keep an open mind and first we what changes we can implement and what we cannot. It may not be 40,000, but perhaps 35,000 or 37,000, depending on the opportunities we have,” said Gjylameti.

“To increase the threshold from 30,000 to 40.000 is basically wrong, because it damages the progressiveness and fiscal integrity of employment,” said Arben Ahmetaj.

Meanwhile, the government has proposed a change in the tax on high wages also, by increasing the 13% tax bracket limit from 130,000 to 150,000 lekë.
