IT’S TIME TO COMPROMISE!

The European Union seeks compromise between the ruling majority and the opposition to resolve the political crisis urgently, as the Union's decision on accession negotiations with Albania is approaching.

During his speech in the activity on “The journey towards the establishment and functioning of the new electronic system of declaring the private interests of elected persons and some public officials”, Soreca determined the fight against corruption as a key priority for Albania.

“The fight against corruption is a key priority as the corruption diminishes the country's reputation. Fighting this phenomenon requires political will.

“The property declaration system is important,” Soreca said, while adding that corruption has a devastating effect on the economy.

The head of the European Union Delegation in Tirana, Luigi Soreca, expressed optimism that a common point of meeting with the political parties exists.

“Dialogue is needed to complete the electoral reform. The ruling majority and opposition should meet, as some amendments in the Electoral Code are needed.

“The ruling majority and opposition should meet halfway,” said Soreca.

The EU ambassador indicated that during the meeting with the majority, the International Monitoring Operation chief demanded that the government make some decisions regarding the electoral process, such as measures against the sale and purchase of votes.

The EU ambassador gave his declarations after the meeting in the High Inspectorate of Declaration and Audit of Assets and Conflict of Interests offices, for the launch of a new electoral pilot system for the declaration of income for about 3,000 civil servants.

This initiative, supported by the EU, USAID and the Council of Europe, is considered important in the fight against corruption and as one of the requirements for Albania's integration process.
