Investment in Kuçova, NATO confirms air base upgrade

Three days after Albania's Prime Minister announced the news that a military base will be built in Kuçova with the help of the North Atlantic Alliance, NATO has now issued a statement.

Asked by the state news agency in Albania, NATO spokesman Piers Cazalet confirmed that a 51 million euro investment will be made with the aim of improving infrastructure on the ground.

"NATO plans to invest 51 million Euros in order to modernize Kuçova Air Base in Albania. The money will go towards improving infrastructure at the base, including fuel depots.

"Funding is part of the NATO Security Investment Program covering major construction projects in allied countries to improve security in NATO space. This program is funded by NATO through contributions from 29 member countries," explained Piers Cazalet.

The NATO spokesperson thanked Albania for the contributions so far, praising the open door policy of Albania.

"We are grateful for Albania's valuable contribution to our common security, including our missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo.

"Albania also gives strong support to our partners, including the contribution to our Custodian Funds for Ukraine, assistance to cyber defense and the transition of military careers.

"Albania also plays an important role in the fight against ISIS, contributing equipment and training to Iraq.

"Furthermore, Albania helps us to enhance security by promoting co-operation across the Western Balkans.

"Your country is a strong advocate of NATO's open door policy and the integration of your neighbors in the Euro-Atlantic family," praised Piers Cazalet.

The news for NATO's decision to build the first military base in the western Balkans was announced a few days ago by Prime Minister Edi Rama through a status on Facebook.

News for building this base has already been welcomed by local residents as having a positive impact on their ability to obtain meaningful work.
